Not All Those Who Walk In The Marketplace

Hi readers!
Happy new month! It might seem as if I am going on a rant these days but some issues cannot be ignored. Two of my favorite bloggers, Tobi (Hey dear!) and Uduak posted about the rape issue recently and I just had to put this post up. If you see nothing wrong about this issue, kindly stop reading here and check out the other posts.

Not All Those Who Walk In The Marketplace rape

What’s with the post caption you might wonder? Growing up, my mother would say sometimes “Not all those mad people who walk in the marketplace are mad.” It is quite normal to see mad people in the marketplace. That is, there are other people who are not in the marketplace that are mad. People who are well dressed but not okay mentally.

I beg to disagree that dressing entice rapists and being raped is the fault of the victim. I say a guy who decides to rape is mad! There are scenarios in which a wife would be naked before her husband and yet he would not feel the urge to have sex at that moment, because he chooses not to. How then shall a male say a lady in short clothing enticed him to rape her?

I read some articles online and I find myself aghast. How is a 6 year old supposed to be blamed for her own rape? She barely even knows what life is about. Shall we say a 73 year old lady raped also enticed the rapist with her clothing and suggestive gestures? And some cases that happen with people they trust. Fathers raping daughters, brothers raping sisters, nannies raping sons, neighbors too? I disagree. We have mad people on the loose! I have heard and read about ladies who rape males too. Come on! Has Sodom and Gomorrah suddenly appeared in our midst? What is wrong with these people? How are their parents supposed to feel?

Not all those mad people in the marketplace are mad! So cover yourself and voice out. There are some people who don’t see anything wrong with “that rape thing”. I read a tweet recently in which the guy said “What’s wrong with me raping someone? It’s just helping her make up her mind.” He’s wrong and so is everyone who think so. Not just rape, it is taking someone’s life and turning it around. Like changing the way the victim thinks.

And to rape victims, be strong. Yes it hurts but you’ll be fine. Be strong! This madness will end someday. Amen!

  1. Yikes, Oyin, you sound pretty mad, but it’s difficult to talk about rape and not be mad. I’m in full support! And what about when people say things like, “Why did she go to a guy’s room?” like she’s a rat who went to meet a cat. They make it sound like men are beasts who totally have no control over their desires. And the men who are in support of this? Tufia!

    1. Lol it’s just complicated. There are actually gentlemen out there who girls should not be scared of visiting but guys are unpredictable that’s why people are usually like “Why did she go to a guy’s room?” We just have mad people in this world ?

      1. Hi Dammy,

I agree with you, ‘murder’ seems apt for an act that kills the dignity of another person.

It is offensive how the victim is denied the position of being the aggrieved and forced into the role of the aggriever. The faulty mindset that the victim is to blame only gives the rapist an excuse for their repulsive behaviour.

Thank you for sharing this relevant topic.

  2. People just try to Blake everything on the victim really. A man cheats on his wife and they blame her for not being a good wife. How do we explain 60 year old men taping 8year olds? It’s never the fault of the person being raped. If people continue with that notion they’ll make it difficult for the victims to ask for help and demand justice. Great post dami?

    1. Exactly. A lot of rape victims these days actually don’t bother to voice out. The blame would be placed on them. “Why did you visit him?” Is there any harm in visiting a friend? “Why were you dressed like that?” Surely a person can dress the way he or she wishes.
There really isn’t any excuse, not the victim’s fault; rapists just want to rape ?
