Why You Should Celebrate & Importance of Birthdays

A birthday is basically the day you were born. I’d like to also consider it a day you start to live. Adopted kids without birthdays are given a birthday by their “parents” sometimes. Please note, there is a difference between birthday and birthdate. The former is a day which occurs each year while the latter is the exact date a person was born. In the modern times, a person is regarded as an adult when you clock 18.

A lot of people and religions have different opinions regarding birthdays but I really do love birthdays. In fact it’s odd that I’m usually excited about other people’s birthday. Things I think about birthdays include:

1. A birthday is a day of joy. Growing up as a child, my parents always endeavour to make my birthday memorable. So my birthday is a thing I really look forward to because of the joy associated with it. And the new things associated with birthdays. It’s not everyday you clock a year older you know. I hardly sleep on my birthday because I’m usually buzzed.

2. A birthday is a status check. My birthday serves an avenue to reflect on my life. How far I’ve come and how far I need to go. I organise my goals and think about things I need to do and those I’ve done.

3. Cake! I know I can eat a cake every other day but there’s this thing about a cake with your name on it, a cake made because of you. And plus, birthday cakes are delicious.

4. Friendship check. A birthday serves as a friendship checker. You get to know who is your real friend and who’s not. If your friend doesn’t remember your birthday and doesn’t send late wishes, check your friendship with such a person. What value is the person adding to you? One year, I had friends who have never been to my house scour around the city trying to find my house. When they eventually did and called me to come outside, I was shocked. Like that was the best gift of that year.

5. Family affair. Birthdays are a way to spend more time with your family. Trust me, the love I get from my family on my birthday is overwhelming. They do all sort of things they’d never do on a normal day to make me happy.

6. Fun (not all the time though). Birthdays are generally fun if you decide to have fun. Some birthdays, I just want to stay in bed all day. And a particular one was pretty boring. Stayed indoors and there was nothing interesting to do. But birthdays are fun especially if you get a birthday party.

7. Birthday wishes. Wishes are the same as prayers. So when people send their wishes, they’re praying for you. Prayers go a long way in the life of a person.

In all, your birthday is your thing. There are lots of beautiful things about it. Whatever you decide to make out of it is solely yours.
