Poetry || The masquerades

You are a masquerade
I said to her
Wrapped up in your own layers
Layers of complexity
And doing a frenzy dance
Which many watch
Fascinated
But unaware of the heat which burns
Underneath your regalia
She snickers
Are you any better than me
Act like you’re okay
But yet masquerading
Just like the other day
You walked with your head high
When you should have broken down
We both laugh
Two masquerades
Then we danced
Like the ancestral beings
Throwing caution to the wind
Our arms wrapped around ourselves
Dancing like our layers would fall off
But it didn’t
Because nobody deserve to see us
For who we really are
So we fell to the ground
Arms flailing
And my inner person crept back inside
Slowly as she had come
Proud of the masquerade I am
